In this paper, we propose a dynamic backoff scheme to support real-time traffic with quality of service (QoS) over IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks. According to the type of traffic transmitted in a station, it is designed to carry out backoff procedures with the different size of contention window. Additionally, as collisions increase, we dynamically change the window size for backoff. The proposed scheme supports advanced QoS for real-time stations as well as being compliant with the 802.11 standard. We evaluated the performance of the proposed scheme using Markov model analysis. The numerical results indicate that the proposed scheme may offer better performance than the conventional 802.11 scheme in terms of saturation throughput.
