The PCTE initiative has long ago passed beyond the confines of the PCTE Esprit project. It now encompasses a large number of projects, organisations and programmes. This paper is an updated version of one that was given at the Esprit Technical Week 87. It describes the PCTE initiative by discussing the work being done on implementations of the PCTE interfaces, their formalisation and evolution. It goes on to describe current efforts to build integrated environments on the interfaces and describes the Pact project in particular. Finally, there is an attempt to place PCTE in a world context.
