GEMSviz is a framework for visualization of distributed computations. It has been extended to handle remote monitoring and steering, as well as tele-immersive collaboration. The computational core consists of a code for 3D finite difference time domain (FDTD) approximation of Maxwell's equations written as part of the General Electro-Magnetic Solvers (GEMS) project. Large parts of the remote visualization software is general but details in the choice of control variables and visualization is specialized to the electro-magnetics code. Implementation challenges stem from the large computational requirements of both simulation and visualization as well as the communication demands of distributed computing and computational steering. The framework builds on the Globus toolkit for communication, data handling, and resource coallocation and the Visualization Toolkit for data filtering and the generation of visualization elements. The software has been used between sites in Europe, Japan, and the US.
