Object-oriented frameworks and design patterns are useful abstractions that are relatively new to the object-oriented paradigm. The implementation of these abstractions, however, suffers from a number of problems due to the fact that insuffcient language support is provided by traditional object-oriented languages. In this paper, we analyse these problems, study the different approaches for providing extended language support that can be identified and specify the requirements that have to be fulfilled by such approaches.
