Abstract

To study the benefit of using an explanatory parallel mechanism for cognitive processing, we propose a model which allows human performance and introspective theories to be tested in a unified way. The approach is verified by showing how it can be used to study natural language learning and understanding at both the utterance and discourse level within the context of coordinated visual stimuli. This study demonstrates that the validity of the underlying theories can be demonstrated by their ability to work together to form a unified explanatory model of the performance of a young language user.
