A new method to recover packet losses using (n, n - 1, m) convolutional codes is proposed. The method is used to encode and decode packets transmitted over the Internet. An independent erasure channel is assumed for packet transmission. We then theoretically analyze the method ability to recover packet losses. The sufficient conditions are derived for packet losses that can be recovered. We evaluate the method using computer simulations, supplemented by comparisons with a simple parity method, which has the same redundancy. The results show that the proposed method has a superior performance.
