We describe the design and prototyping of an experimental protocol, the Universal Remote Console Protocol (URCP), to support mobile, multimodal, short duration interactions using a mobile console to interact with a smart building and appliances within it. Our experience thus far indicates that URCP is lightweight, easy to implement and supports flexibility in the design of user-interfaces.
