Goal-oriented tutoring in adaptive hypermedia has been proved to be a powerful technique in educational environments. By providing guided sequencing, link annotation, sorting and hiding of links, adaptive systems support the student individually in navigating through complex hyperspaces. Those basic techniques adapt the interface according to the student's current state of knowledge and the current educational goal. State of the art systems often implement these adaptation techniques, but remain static with respect to the educational goal the system adapts to. Our approach supports the user in defining his or her own learning goal by requesting help from an automated guard, which sets the new learning goal according to the current teaching operation, for which the guard was called. This allows the system to provide the student with adaptation specific to his or her current self-defined goal.
