The structural computing paradigm has been described as one which holds significant promise and potential for the developers of both applications and infrastructure services. So far, however, structural computing can be viewed mainly as an evolutionary step along the developing line of computing infrastructures for supporting hypermedia. The field is still a new one though. The fundamental ideas that define structural computing appear to be sufficiently different to have the potential for a revolutionary effect. However, for this to occur, it is necessary for the field to advance beyond its present stage and for researchers to start focusing on the essential features that define this new paradigm and the implications they will have.
