Abstract

Traditional JPEG progressive transmission transmits quantized DCT coefficients one by one, and does not consider the importance among the bits in each transmission stage. Thus the reconstructed image quality at earlier stages is not acceptable. This phenomenon does not match the requirements of progressive image transmission. In this paper, we propose a new method to improve the reconstructed image quality of JPEG progressive transmission. We assign each bit of quantized DCT coefficients a weight number, and collect all weight numbers into a weight table. The weight table is fixed for all blocks and all images in the proposed method, and is owned in both sender and receiver. Next, the sender and receiver transmit and receive the data bits based on the weight table. Compared to JPEG, the experimental results show that the method can significantly improve the reconstructed image quality at each transmission stage, especially for the first and the second stages.
