Abstract

In this paper, we describe an automatic translation system involving French, Italian, English and German. The technique used in this project consists of the classical steps parsing-transfer-generation. Input sentences are parsed by a generic, multilingual parser based on the Principles & Parameters Theory of Chomsky's Generative Grammar. The transfer mechanism acts on hybrid structures that mix lexical items with abstract semantic information. Finally, a principle-based generator produces correct output sentences.
