Abstract

The hybrid wavelet packet improves the performance of wavelet packet transform by choosing appropriate quadrature mirror filters. Therfore it is proposed for digital image compression in this paper. We use a top-down scheme to optimize the hybrid wavelet packet and the wavelet coefficients are quantized with a successive approximation algorithm and then coded with context-based arithmetic coding. Experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm has better performance than SPIHT and EZW for images with complex texture.
