Abstract

Identifying the major defects of a web-site is comparatively easy. The difficult part of web-site usability improvement is managing the organizational politics involved in implementing change. This chapter describes the Rural-Net project, part of a European Union (EU) funded initiative which focused on the use of web technologies in rural areas to improve the social and economic well-being of local residents and businesses. It illustrates the difficulties of trying to please many stakeholders, and discusses the importance of structuring information in a way which speaks the users' language, a vital component for easy navigation of a web-site, especially for inexperienced users. No real names are used throughout.
