This paper describes software project management audits as they have been defined in the literature. It outlines the motivation for conducting such audits routinely, which differs markedly from earlier recommendations in the literature and outlines how an audit can be conducted efficiently, from both the points of view of the software project manager and the auditing team, using procedures that have not been previously published. Finally, it provides some data on concerns that were found during several audits in which the author has participated and recommends, based on the data, what issues project managers and project management auditors should focus on when planning projects and conducting audits in the future.
