We describe an approach to compute the surface skeleton of a 3D object using distance information. It is based on iterative thinning of the distance transform of the object. The surface skeleton of an object should be topologically equivalent to the original object, centred within the object, a thin subset of the object, and such that the original object can be recovered from the surface skeleton. We emphasize the last property, i.e., the importance of having a reversible surface skeleton, and present a general framework for distance based skeletonization algorithms. Resulting surface skeletons for the D6 and the D26 distance cases are shown.
