Abstract

Information retrieval is a complex topic, but simple Unix utilities are capable of demonstrating the essential differences among the major information retrieval paradigms. In order to clearly demonstrate the effect of paradigm choice on results, we have our students program the major IR retrieval algorithms using UNIX primitives. This avoids the overhead and complexity of using a production retrieval system. At the same time the students avoid tedious and error prone I/O programming. The scripts and programs used also allow the student to experiment easily with retrieval methods. The work incidentally provides a compact introduction to UNIX programming.
