Abstract

The Unix operating system has been modified to allow the gathering of statistics of program performance and instruction usage. A procedure to produce instruction usage statistics is outlined, and a selection of statistics gathered by this method is displayed. The statistics are presented as food for thought, and only tentative conclusions are drawn. Some typical aspects and tentative conclusions specific to the computer, the operating system, and the monitor are then presented.
