In recent decades, the field of artificial intelligence has covered much research in the area of computer translation. The targets of this research have often been the most broadly spoken languages, like English, French, Chinese and Russian. As a result, little or no AI-related research has been done with the less mainstream languages. In particular, for various reasons many African cultures are without access to computer translation. This sometimes hinders their progress in a globalized world, as they are more susceptible to being excluded from translation efforts. The aim of my project is to provide a machine translator for the English and Yoruba languages that would be beneficial both practically and as a pacesetter for other West African languages in computational linguistics using classic syntactic and semantic analyzing algorithms.
