Abstract

To support all traffic types, especially data-centric traffic, carrier-based terabit packet switches are required to satisfy the ever-increasing bandwidth explosion. In this paper, we list briefly the recent activities on optical packet switches. Then, we present several architectures of a terabit-level packet switch using optoelectronic technologies. As a near term solution for all-optical switching, two optical bufferless interconnection networks, implemented by small modular structures to provide capacity in the range of terabit per second, are proposed and discussed. Alternatively, as a long-term approach, a novel optical packet switch with small quantity of optical buffers is presented and its performance with respect to buffer size is discussed.
