An arbitrary order edge element approach for problems of electromagnetic wave scattering is described. The construction of an a-posteriori error estimator enables bounds to be placed on computed outputs of practical interest, such as the scattering width distribution. The use of adaptivity is investigated and the possibilities offered by the use of methods based upon reduced-order approximation are also outlined.
