Abstract

Distributed, heterogeneous, federated, and so on, multidatabases model complementary universes. Countless examples include banks, hospitals, car rentals, restaurants and so on. We overview the technical problems that the designer of a modern multidatabase system faces. We discuss solutions using object-relational databases, multidatabase access through the Internet, and current standards for database connectivity. We overview directions for efficient implementation: multidatabase queries with precomputing and aggregate data materialization, over-scalable and distributed data structures.
