Abstract

Decision rules are the most prominent subtype of subgroup patterns (see Chapter 16.3). They are expressed as if-then rules with preconditional left-hand-side subgroups and conclusive right-hand-side target groups, The subgroups and target groups are constructed as conjunctions of propositional selectors. More expressive rules based on first-order Horn clauses are treated in Chapter 16.2.4. In this article, we discuss algorithms that derive rule sets that are going to be used for classification purposes. Specifically, we focus on description languages for constructing left-hand-side preconditional subgroups, evaluation functions measuring the quality of rules, and search strategies deriving rule sets.
