Abstract

We investigate the bidirectional links between knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) and artificial intelligence (AI). Both are concerned with intelligent agents, search, knowledge representation, knowledge acquisition, and knowledge application, but they differ in many ways. We contrast them first and explain why they differ. Then we outline several ways in which AI can increase its influence on KDD, as well as several areas where KDD can impact AI.
