New technology is dramatically changing the role of business systems and practices in the banking and insurance world. Computers, mass storage, and electronic datacapture are now all commonplace. However, to analyze and transform financial data or customer portfolio information into useable knowledge is difficult and very time consuming. The use of KDD and data mining as an analysis and decision support tool has become widely accepted within financial services. Here we give an overview of techniques applicable, in particular, to the fields of market and credit risk management, trading, portfolio management, customer care, and marketing in financial institutions.
