Abstract

Implementation and use of a prototype distributed active data archive system are outlined. This system is based on the Synthetic Aperture Radar Atlas (SARA) and utilises cooperative software agents for data access and analysis, and uses XML to model metadata and support agent communication. The analysis is undertaken on a digital library containing images of the Earth acquired by the Space Shuttle, and subsequently enhanced by data derived from Earth stations. An application scientist can view an existing image, combine an image with textual data for a particular region from a regional geographic information server, or combine images for a given region over a period of time to look for changes in a region.
