Abstract

Service discovery is one key aspect in the enablingtechnologies for service-oriented system architecture.Current distributed technologies such as CORBA andWeb Services define a communication protocol foradvertising and discovering services but less attention hasbeen paid to service descriptions themselves. This paperproposes attribute-based templates for describing servicedescriptions. The templates are a compilation of theresults from an empirical study on descriptions ofsoftware components advertised on the Internet and theattributes listed by related literature. Although thetemplates should not be considered complete, they act asa common guideline to assist service providers with thespecification of their services, and can be adopted byimplementations of description repositories. By having acommon guideline, services are described in a moreuniform way and client enterprises will also have a moreconsistent view of service descriptions and a moreextensive set of information that is useful for serviceselection.
