Simulation cloning is designed to satisfy therequirement of examining alternative scenariosconcurrently. This paper discusses the issues involved incloning distributed simulations based on the High LevelArchitecture (HLA) as well as proposing tentativesolutions. Alternative solutions are compared from boththe qualitative and quantitative point of view. In terms offederation organization, candidate solutions can beclassified into the single-federation and the multiple-federation categories. In order to guarantee thecorrectness and optimize the performance of the wholecloning-enabled distributed simulation, the single-federation solution requires an additional mechanism toisolate the interactions amongst alternative executions.Data Distribution Management (DDM) is one of thecandidate approaches. To measure the trade-off betweencomplexity and efficiency, we introduce a series ofexperiments to benchmark various solutions at the RTIlevel. The benchmark results indicate that the single-federation solution provides encouraging performancewhen using DDM.
