Abstract

The Pitman Shorthand Language (PSL) is a recordingmedium practiced in all organizations, where English isthe medium of transaction. It has the practical advantageof high speed of recording, more than 180 words perminute, because of which it is appreciably received allover. This recording medium has its continued existence inspite of considerable developments in speech processingsystems, which are not universally established yet. In orderto exploit vast transcribing potential of PSL a new area ofresearch on automation of PSL processing, is conceived. This paper describes the substitution of equivalentEnglish words for the phonetic compositions of thetranscribed words, in the process of automatic generationof English text from PSL document. The transcription isachieved by making use of two new types of dictionariesspecifically developed and implemented for this purpose, one of them being a phonetic dictionary wherein the wordsare sequenced in phonetic order and the other being anextended conventional dictionary wherein the words areappended with additional details such as domain of theiruse, forms of verbs and so on. The proposed approach istested with limited words in both the types dictionaries andis found to perform satisfactorily. However, the scopeexists for addition of new words into these dictionaries.
