Abstract

In designing a relational schema, we often considerthat an attribute of a table is replicated into other table toreduce the join cost. And such a possible redundancy canbe grasped by E/R model (i.e., semantic modeling).Similarly, in mapping XML into relations, we canconsider some redundancy to enhance query performanceand they can be grasped by the structural traits of DTD(or XML schema). In this paper, we introduce some suchpractical replication and a tool for efficient managementof the replication. Finally, read and update query costsarising by employing the structural redundancy areanalyzed experimentally and it is shown that thesereplication can be very useful.
