Abstract

The predictive Multiple Description coding problem can be posed as a variantof the well-known Wyner-Ziv side-information problem.Predictive MD coding inthis framework (termed the WYZE-PMD framework) eliminates the problem of predictivemismatch without requiring restrictive channel assumptions or high latency. In the present paper we analyze the performance of two-channel one-step predictiveMD coding within the WYZE-PMD framework.Specifically, we obtain achievablerate-distortion (R-D) regions for the problem of MD coding in the presence of correlateddecoder side-information, and use these to obtain the operational R-D performance for predicitive MD coding under certain restrictions. We propose practicalcode constructions within the WYZE-PMD framework, and compare the performanceof the proposed codes with conventional approaches, for communication of a first-order Gauss-Markov source over two erasure channels with independent failureprobabilities. Results indicate that the proposed approach significantly out-performsconventional approaches, in terms of R-D performance.
