Abstract

Service-based Grid infrastructures emphasize service compositionrather than sharing of low level resources. The idea is tobuild Grid applications out of computational services provided bythe different sites of the Grid. Recent developments in the area ofWeb services have strengthened this idea by standardizing procedureslike service description, publication and invocation. What isstill missing is the infrastructure necessary to support the completelife cycle of applications running on service based Grids, i.e., suitableprogramming paradigms, execution infrastructure, and theability to monitor and control such computations. Moreover, oncecomputations are made of composable services, dependability becomesa key issue that needs to be addressed by the infrastructureas it cannot be addressed separately by each individual service. To address these concerns, we have developed the BioOpera Gridcomputing platform. BioOpera is a process support system fordependable cluster computing that has been extended with additionalfunctionality to provide adequate support for service-basedGrids. In this paper we describe how BioOpera can be used todevelop, execute, and administer highly dependable computationsover service-based Grids.
