Abstract

This paper presents the framework of a wireless data network architecture. Minimizing the coupling between the RF technology and the land based infrastructure using standard network protocols such as IP allows the parallel and independent evolution of the RF data carriage and application technologies. Cellular digital packet data (CDPD) is an overlay on the existing AMPS analogue cellular network. Digital airlink technology is emerging as the vehicle for new cellular and PCS networks. This paper outlines how CDPD conforms to this flexible architecture and facilitates the migration of access methods to include AMPS circuit switched and the emerging CDMA digital technologies. The CDPD architecture is also compared with that of the emerging GSM GPRS model. It is shown how both architectures follow the same general framework. The services offered by these wireless architectures are discussed together with example applications.
