Abstract

The increasing pressure on software engineering educators to respond to the needs of the expanding software industry is outlined. The fact that these needs are often quite specialized but, in terms of software research, quite mundane or even obsolescent poses problems for the educators. While it is clearly not feasible to expand curricula indefinitely, it is argued that the balance between breadth and depth, and between the professional and the technical, are of great concern to industry. It is suggested however, that educators have responsibilities which are both wider and longer term than merely satisfying immediate industrial needs. Finally, some questions are posed for debate.
