In this paper, we shall propose an approach toprotect the copyright of image data. There have beenmany watermarking techniques proposed to guard thecopyright of image data, most of which need to embed thewatermark in the cover image. Unfortunately, theembedding always results in the reduction of imagequality. To achieve the goal of copyright protectionwithout reducing the image quality, we incorporate theconcept of digital signature into our approach. At thebeginning, we produce a signature in correspondence withthe cover image and the watermark. We send thissignature to a certification authority or a trusted third party. If someone pirates our image someday, we can stillretrieve the watermark image with the signature that wasstored at the certification authority and prove that theimage is ours. Notice that the watermark image that weuse in this work is a gray-level image.
