We derive a machine-based face recognition system theoretically which is similar to many practical ones and show its behaviour has features of the human system. We reproduce the caricature effect, show that human and machine-based similarity and distinctiveness are connected and confirm machine based predictions of typicality with human data. Finally we draw lessons for machine-based recognition.
