The paper describes a visual environment generator, the VLPEG system, based on the Symbol RelationGrammar model. The system exploits a classification ofvisual languages in terms of graphical symbols and therelationships among them. For each class a lexicalanalyzer is able to interpret the physical layout of anydrawn visual sentence and to provide a correspondinghigh level representation. Thanks to this capability thevisual language designer may disregard the physicalfeatures and specify the language at a high abstractionlevel.VLPEG supports the rapid prototyping of visualenvironments and offers the designer the possibility tooperate in automatic generation mode, by exploiting agrammar infere nce module. This capability allows thedesigner to focus on the structural features of the targetlanguage and quickly receive feedback from the customerduring the language prototyping process.
