Abstract

The ever growing amount of heterogeneous data exchangedthrough the Internet, combined with the popularityof XML, make structured document transformations anincreasingly important application domain. Most of theexisting solutions for expressing XML transformations aretextual languages, such as XSLT or DOM combined witha general-purpose programming language. Several toolsbuild on top of these languages, providing a graphical environmentand debugging facilities. Transformations arehowever still specified in a textual way using the underlyinglanguage (often XSLT), thus requiring users to learn it.We believe that visual programming techniques are well-suitedto representing XML structures and make the specificationof transformations simpler. We propose a visual languagefor the specification of XML transformations in aninteractive environment based on a zoomable user interfacetoolkit and on two target languages specialised in structuretransformations: Circus and XSLT.
