Abstract

This paper describes visualisation tools to support thetask of selecting one object from a collection of many onthe basis of its attribute values. For this frequentlyencountered task we identify a set of tools appropriate toa spectrum of collection sizes extending from hundreds ofthousands to as few as ten or twenty. Although some ofthe tools have not previously been reported, and somehave received only cursory attention in the literature, others are well known. This paper presents the tools in acoherent and consistent manner, showing relationshipsand progressions between them, identifying theirprincipal attributes and relating them to the problemsolver's cognitive task. We conclude with a proposal forintegrating techniques within a single tool in order todeal with a continuum of working set sizes.
