For interactive computer systems, most of the communication between users and the computer occurs via the written and graphic information shown on the video display terminal. Let's call that information “the screen,” whether it shows text or graphics. Effective communication between the user and the system depends on how well the screen has been designed. One aspect of that design is how the screens, individually and as a whole, have been worded and organized for overall readability.
