Abstract

The Submarine Combat System is changing at a rapid pace coincident with changes in technology, submarine missions, and threat capabilities. Rapid change causes significant difficulties in the effective definition of the human interface to the system. These difficulties occur with the introduction of each new system or capability and are related to meeting the submarine crew's functional needs, without overwhelming it with too much unneeded information. This paper explores using simulated tactical environments as inputs to a functional prioritization scheme to systematically identify the functional needs of the submarine crew, and provide a means of effective human interface definition.
