In existing distributed systems a large gap between the application and the low level communication protocols does exist. Usually, this gap results in a rather ad hoc implementation of the application. To reduce this gap, an intermediate level called abstract network has been introduced and a notation based on Petri net, for describing the semantics of the internode communication of the abstract network is presented.
