Abstract

Local networks have many characteristics which are quite different than those of geographically dispersed networks. In this paper, we first review these defining characteristics of local networks and present a brief evolutionary history of local networks. We then review three dominant architectures for local networks together with examples. In the last part of this paper, we describe some of the protocol considerations for local networks.
