Abstract

This paper retraces an evolution of thought on the key problems in producing software. The author's perspective is traced through an early emphasis on development tools and methodology to an emphasis on specifications and requirements to a broader emphasis on overall manageability. The evolving thought process is projected ahead and illustrated by some current efforts and activities. The paper concludes with a discussion of the approaches to further enhancing the development process and the author's view on which areas should be given the main attention.
