Although APL has been highly praised as a powerful tool for individual problem-solving, many EDP managers have expressed concern about its suitability in a production environment. They feel that APL's powerful and compact notation makes it “unreadable” and thus “unmaintainable.” This paper explores the background of this issue and offers six rules which may help to alleviate the situation, chief among these being the concept of “throwaway code.”
