In the past few years the data processing industry has made many attempts to increase program quality and programmer productivity. The primary target has been the lack of meaningful communication across functional boundaries within the general data processing environment. These boundaries are defined with respect to the functional areas which they separate. Attempts at buffering these technical mismatches are explored. The conclusion is drawn that barriers are not just of a technical nature, but also are caused by a general lack of understanding, empathy, and trust for people outside of one's own functional area. The author suggests that efforts to enhance the “socialization process” compose the necessary first step to improving communication across these functional boundaries.
