Abstract

As the computer users getting more sophisticated, the demand for more memory has been growing. At a computer installation, the cost of memory often exceeds the cost of CPU. As a result the efficient utilization of memory has received much attention of the computer system managers and analysts. This fact is evidenced by the effort in monitoring memory location activities at major computer centers and many published articles such as those by Luderer1 and Denning.2 Here the memory utilization is defined and discussed from the point view of system performance. This definition of utilization may be applied to all levels of storage such as drum, disk and tape. Also, the guiding principle for memory management will be discussed.
