Abstract

This paper presents performance measurements and analysis undertaken during development of RCA's Time Sharing Operating System (TSOS). The measurement results provide some indications of the capabilities of the operating system and its hardware. The analysis of the results provides information in attempting to establish general principals of multiprogramming operating system design. In the following we describe: the equipment and operating system of TSOS; the measurement method, results, and analysis; and finally, conclusions and some opinions about time slicing and demand paging in operating systems.
