A bookshelf containing 44 books was studied to determine the amount of information found per linear centimeter. The information density was measured for both textual information and pictorial information. The quantity of information found in pictorial form was found to be significantly larger than the textual information when both were represented in uncompressed form. But, when represented in compressed form, the textual and pictorial information were found to be roughly equal.
