Abstract

For me to talk to you about what computing centers will be like in the future is rather like bringing coals to Newcastle. On the other hand, that doesn't preclude me from having opinions --- neither does lack of knowledge. You must understand from whence I come. I have spent my faculty life at Wayne State University, the University of Missouri at Columbia and Iowa State University, three large midwestern state universities that between them educate 85,000 students a year. They are the heartland universities. They are the major institutions, the kinds of institutions that are responsible for educating the leadership of our nation; they tend not to be cutting, or bleeding, edge, universities, but they have a major need for integrating technology.
