Abstract

Syntactic extension methods (see, for example (5)) usually involve the following steps: (1) recognize a syntactic pattern in the program and find its (string) parameters (2) call the appropriate string function, substituting actual for formal parameters (3) execute the result of the string function The specification of syntactic extensions results in modifying the translator incrementally. We will not be further concerned with syntactic extensions in this paper.
